I am weary, God, but I can prevail.

“I am weary, God, but I can prevail” - Proverbs 30:1

I love this verse.

It resonates deeply with me and how I have so frequently found myself on the front end of weariness struggling to get to the back half of prevailing.

The honesty is refreshing and I love how this verse starts with self-awareness: I am weary. How many times have I ignored the lights on the dashboard of my life warning me that my pace is unsustainable? Our weariness is revealing something to us, what is it?

Perhaps we are going so fast that we’ve not even bothered to notice our weariness.

“I can’t sit down, or I’ll never get back up again.” We’ve all thought it. We’ve all said it. Many of us are living it, daily.

If you are weary right now, this is your invitation to recenter.

In our weariness, we are invited to pause and recenter. And it’s a bit fascinating to me that the way we recenter also happens to be at the very center of this passage: God.

God is the center between a growing awareness around my weariness and the other side of “I can prevail”.

Jesus asks us “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

I come back to this passage frequently because it’s a wellspring of life to me. It clearly articulates that a relationship with our creator bridges the gap between weariness and prevailing. It’s not the absence of work or those things that are tiring, it’s finding God in the middle of it that helps us to live freely and lightly.

“I am weary, God, but I can prevail.”

A couple of questions for reflection:

  1. What would it look like to turn towards your relationship with God in this season of life?

  2. Where would you locate God in the midst of your experience?

  3. What do you think God desires for you right now?
